Mentoring..... A way of sharing both the formal and informal knowledge necessary to achieve effective and efficient methods of performing professional duties and reaching personal goals..... In 1992 the Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders implemented a Mentoring Program to provide professional resources and support to newly appointed Recorders. The program matches an experienced Recorder, with similar duties and in a municipality or district located as close as possible to a new member of our profession or Association. The mentor will be able to provide advice, assistance, and support that will allow the new Recorder to become strong and self-sufficient in the administration of their duties. Typical assistance from a mentor could range from answering questions to assisting in the preparation of ordinances, minutes, agendas, budgets, as well as explaining parliamentary procedures and tips for effective Council meetings and election procedures. Mentors may also provide moral support and encouragement. The O.A.M.R. Mentor Program has been very successful since implementation. The feedback has been positive and several of those who have benefited from the program now serve as a Mentor for other individuals. The Mentoring and Leadership Development Committee oversees and coordinates this program. "As an individual who benefited from the program at my first conference in 1993, I cannot tell you how relieved I was to be able to "tag" along with my Mentor during the conference. It provided me with the basis of what the Association can offer both professionally and personally. If she did not know the answer, she knew someone who would. It is this kind of networking opportunities which provide the basis for our organization. I hope each of the new members will reap the positive rewards this program has to offer." Denise Carey, CMC. The annual conferences are a perfect time to welcome all our new members and thank those members of our Association who are participating in the Mentor Program. Stay tuned for more information about specifics in up coming newsletters or on this website.
